History

Xochimilco was once its own settlement on the shores of a vast lake system in the Valley of Mexico, predating the Spanish conquest by centuries. Its name comes from Nahuatl and roughly translates to "place of the flower fields," a reference to the chinampas, artificial farming islands built up from lake mud and woven reeds that the Aztecs used to grow crops for the nearby capital. As Mexico City expanded, most of the original lake was drained, but Xochimilco's canal network survived, and it remains one of the last places where this pre-Hispanic water system is still in active use. UNESCO recognized the area as a World Heritage Site for this reason.
