Tours and Activities in El Chaltén | Explore Patagonia

El Chaltén is a small village surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, nestled at the foot of the famous Fitz Roy mountain in Patagonia, Argentina. Known as the hiking capital of the country, it's a dream destination for trekking enthusiasts and nature lovers. The combination of rugged landscapes, turquoise lakes, and dramatic peaks makes every visit unforgettable.

A Brief History

Founded in 1985, El Chaltén is one of the youngest towns in Argentina. It was established mainly to settle a border dispute between Argentina and Chile. Over the years, this remote spot has turned into a hub for hikers and adventurers from all over the world, drawn by its unique charm and the promise of untouched wilderness.

Best Time to Visit

The months from October to April offer the best weather for outdoor activities, with longer days and milder temperatures. Winter months can be harsh and some trails may close due to snow, so if you're looking to hike, the spring to autumn period is ideal.

What are the must-do activities?

The area is famous for hiking trails, like Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Capri, which offer stunning views of Mount Fitz Roy. Other activities include boat trips on Lake Viedma, glacier trekking, and birdwatching. Even short walks around the village provide excellent photo opportunities.

Is it suitable for families?

Yes! While some treks require good physical condition, there are plenty of gentler paths and nature walks suitable for families and children. Local guides can tailor experiences for all ages.
